The Riddle-Master of Hed was published a little late for getting away with the hurried pacing and thin characterization, but some of the components here are just so rich to give excuse to the many deviations from Great Book demands.

It is easy to see how this would be a classic.4/5. It needs to be said that The Riddle-Master of Hed was written in a long time before the modern glut of fantasy novels perforate shelves, that it is the first book in a trilogy (mothing longer) and that it is not a massive breeze block of a book, rather a nicely sized, perhaps even scant + pages/5(38).

The Riddle Master is a book without much in the way of riddles, unless a riddle is defined as an unanswered question. It is a book with occasional action. There is lots of aimless travelling around by main characters, and tons of conversations about people who are not right there/5().

This is her 'amazingly epic' trilogy, inspired by the Lord of the Rings trilogy. This is the first book in a trilogy, and unlike most such volumes which at least appear to be complete in themselves, it ends with a cliffhanger when Morgon, the young hero, discovers that the benign, all-governing High One he's been seeking, the evil destroyer of ancient legend, and the master who taught him at riddle school are one and the same.
